Retinol: How to Use this Powerful Ingredient
When used properly, retinol is a powerful ingredient that fights the signs of aging and can help reduce the occurrence of acne blemishes. Retinol is essentially pure Vitamin A, and it’s found in many over the counter aging creams. It works by helping the skin produce more collagen and increasing cell regrowth. With this simple guide, you’ll learn how to maximize the effectiveness of your retinol regimen.
Before you begin, here are some tips that will come in handy for those of you who are using a retinol regimen for the first time. First of all, you can buy retinol in different strengths. Always read the packaging, and begin with a lower strength. Ask your dermatologist about using it to treat acne, as it can be a great way to unclog pores and treat current breakouts as well as preventing future ones. Once you have started using retinol, don’t be tempted to use other products also containing it. Additionally, because it increases exfoliation, it shouldn’t be used in conjunction with any other exfoliating or irritating product, including masks, peels, and wax.
Now it’s time to begin. First, buy a serum, cream or lotion containing retinol. Skin Care by Alana sells several retinol products If you prefer, you can go to your dermatologist and get prescription strength retinol, but that may be best for more advanced users.
Second, wash your face with your favorite cleanser. After you do this, apply a very small amount (about the sized of a pea) of the retinol product to your face’s affected areas. IMPORTANT: Only do this regimen at night, because the daily sun exposure can lead to irritation. Also, always use a sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) because retinol increases photosensitivity. If your skin becomes severely dry, use a moisturizer daily.
Irritation may occur, so keep an eye out for it. If flaking or irritation persists, reduce the number of nights you do it by only doing it every other night. Eventually, your skin will get used to it, at which point you can continue nightly use.
Retinol can be used until you see the results for yourself, but the duration depends on the state of your skin when you begin the regimen. The appearance of wrinkles can be reduced within 8-12 weeks, and general skin improvement is seen within two weeks.
Retinol is an excellent way to achieve more youthful skin. When used properly, retinol is an effective, healthy treatment to use on signs of aging and acne.
